Functions and responsibilities of a Legal Assistant in Family Law


As a Family Law Legal Assistant, you will play a vital role in supporting our attorneys and clients on a variety of family law matters. Your responsibilities will include:

  • Draft and prepare legal documents such as petitions, motions, pleadings, judgments, and declarations.

  • Organize and manage case files, ensuring that all documents are submitted correctly and on time.

  • Assist in the preparation of discovery documents and responses.

  • Conduct legal research to support case preparation and strategy.

  • Investigate and gather facts relevant to the cases, including interviews with witnesses and collection of evidence.

  • Summarize and analyze legal documents and research findings for attorney review.

  • Prepare and submit legal documents, ensuring compliance with court rules and deadlines.

  • Coordinate and schedule depositions, hearings, and other judicial activities.

  • Supporting lawyers during trials and hearings, organizing evidence and managing case files.

  • Maintaining lawyers' calendars, scheduling appointments, and managing deadlines.

  • Provide general assistance to lawyers and other team members as needed.

  • Guide clients on procedures and documentation requirements.

  • Supporting junior paralegals and legal assistants.

  • Ensure that all activities comply with legal and ethical standards.

  • Maintain strict confidentiality of information and details of cases.

  • Conduct interviews with clients to gather information about their legal problems.

  • Perform administrative tasks such as answering phone calls and keeping the case filing system organized so that documents are easily accessible.

  • Assisting lawyers in preparing for trial, organizing evidence, assisting in client meetings, filing motions, researching legal articles, and coordinating witnesses.

  • Drafting summonses and coordinating with court process servers.

  • Assist in the preparation of legal documentation, pleadings, and correspondence, including interrogatories, subpoenas, notices of deposition, complaints, pretrial orders, legal briefs, and affidavits.

Requirements

  • Minimum 3 years of experience in legal services under the supervision of an attorney in a law firm.

  • Have completed an ABA-approved paralegal certification program, such as an associate's degree or a program at a school specializing in paralegal studies (bachelor's degree preferred).

  • Strong interpersonal skills and talent for writing and grammar.

  • Preference will be given to candidates with professional certification in legal assistance or advanced training in the area.

  • High level organizational skills and excellent time management.

Salary or Compensation

$35 - $40 per hour
